Dear Colleagues, The Houston Society of Clinical Pathologists (HSCP) continues to bring together the pathologists in one the most dynamic medical communities in the world. The traditional partnership between the private practice and academic communities continues to bring strength to our society and to promote our goals in providing continued education and supporting excellence in patient care. Last year under the leadership of Dr. Michelle Williams and Scientific Program Director Dr. Bhuvana Krishnan, the society enjoyed a dynamic group of expert speakers throughout the year. I thank Dr. Williams for her service as president of the society and her continued help. She has left big shoes to fill. We also thank Drs Victor Prieto and Hafeez Diwan for putting together the 2013 Spring Symposium on Dermatopathology and for making it a great success. This year our scientific program will begin with a presentation on the role of the pathologist in personalized medicine in genitourinary pathology. We are privileged to have the always outstanding Dr. Jae Ro as the speaker. We look forward to his insights. Our new scientific program chair is Dr. Yimin Ge. Please look for the monthly HSCP meeting announcements regarding upcoming speakers and topics. The 2014 Spring Symposium will present updates in gastrointestinal pathology. I thank our course directors, Drs. Mamoun Younes and Asif Rashid for assembling an outstanding group of nationally recognized speakers to present this topic. Gastrointestinal biopsies are arguably the most common specimen in the general pathology practice and we can all benefit from their insight and knowledge of the latest advances and new demands for molecular behavior and guidance for personalized therapy that we are seeing in our practices. The society recognizes an outstanding pathologist through the Harlan J. Spjut Award which was established in 1989. Announcements for candidate nominations will be forthcoming to society members. This year’s honoree will be announced towards the end of the year and the award dinner will take place the evening of the Spring Symposium. I am honored to be president of HSCP for the coming year. I look forward to meeting with you at our upcoming meetings and symposium and encourage you to invite a colleague or trainee to experience this educational and networking opportunity with you. There is also an ongoing demand for new officers I also encourage anyone who wishes to become more involved the society to contact me or any of the officers. I have found the experience of being involved with the society to be very rewarding. Best Regards, Michael H. Covinsky, M.D. Ph.D.
